WPS Weekly Update

It was an exciting week in the WPS as the teams entered into the second half of the inaugural season and continue to fight for the top spots in the league.  The Sol still solidly holds first place having given up only four goals all season and winning seven out of their last nine matches. This past weekend, the Sol held Sky Blue FC to a scoreless tie despite being outshot 14-5 and on their heels most of the game.

Sky Blue vs LA SolSaturday’s game between St. Louis Athletica and the Boston Breakers had huge implications for the league standings, and Athletica captured an important win to move them into second place in the league.  Eniola Aluko’s 43rd minute goal was enough to give Athletica the edge they needed, as they held the first half lead to a 1-0 final score over the Breakers.

The Washington Freedom posted their first shutout this weekend against the Chicago Red Stars, despite head coach Jim Gabarra making two changes to the back line.  The highly physical match earned both teams a pair of yellow cards and ended in a 0-0 draw.  The Freedom are currently 3rd place in the league and will travel to St. Louis for their next game to defend their position.
