Philadelphia Independence In High Gear For Upcoming Player Drafts

Washington Freedom vs Los Angeles Sol

Two-Time WPSL National Champion Coach Joins Team As Consultant

Exciting news will be coming within days from the Independence front office regarding the team’s draft order and process for the September 15 WPS Expansion Draft, and the September 22 WPS International Draft.  Stay tuned to our website to hear the big news and watch as we make selections for the 2010 Philadelphia Independence roster.

In preparation for the player drafts, the Independence has been hard at work to identify world-class players that will be available on draft day for selection.  To continue this process, and to ensure no “stone goes unturned,” the team announced today that it has hired former standout player, distinguished youth club coach and executive, and two-time WPSL National Champion coach Paul Riley as a consultant.  Originally from Liverpool, England, Paul has a long and illustrious career coaching men’s and women’s soccer, including two National Championships (2006 and 2009) with the WPSL Long Island Fury.  Says General Manager and interim Head Coach Terry Foley, “we are thrilled to have Paul join our staff, just in time for our evaluation of the players at the European Championships in Finland and in final preparation for our expansion and international draft selections.  I value greatly Paul’s expertise in identifying talent and skill as well as his decades of experience building and coaching teams to elite levels.  Since he has coached players now in the WPS, Paul understands well what it takes to be an impact player in the league.”

Stay connected to the Philadelphia Independence draft activities, including player selections as well as travels to Europe by Terry and Paul as they identify our top choices for draft day.  Look for their daily summaries on our website straight from Finland about what they are seeing on the field during the final week of August!!!
