Philadelphia Independence Proud of Mini-Camp Results – Team is Grateful to Players and to Chestnut Hill College
(By David Halstead, President/CEO)
The Philadelphia Independence is striving to be a model sports organization and the envy of the WPS league. I’m proud to say I think we moved a little closer to those goals over the past few days. The ability of our young organization, especially the GM and coaching staff, to pool resources and relationships and get into this mini-camp some of the best female soccer talent in the region was impressive. The level of skill, commitment, and cooperation on the field at the training sessions and scrimmages was inspiring – reflective of the vast soccer talent in the area and the dedication of the players hopeful of a roster spot. These factors, coupled with the outstanding setting, resulted in a hugely successful inaugural training camp for the Philadelphia Independence.
Our host, Chestnut Hill College, deserves lots and lots of credit and accolades for its professionalism, terrific facilities, residence halls, dining areas, training and security staff, and overall commitment to excellence. The College provided a first-class venue for this high-level athletic event. In the same week it welcomed the College’s new Athletic Director, Lynn Tubman, the leadership and staff of Chestnut Hill found time each day to be available to the Independence, the event’s media, and even a few of the spectators in order to keep the camp running smoothly and talk about the rich tradition of academics and education on this idyllic campus outside Philadelphia. We are very appreciative of Chestnut Hill’s hospitality, impressed by its vision for its road ahead, and are optimistic about potential longer-term partnerships as we both move forward.
GM Terry Foley and Coach Matt Driver will be hard at work in the coming weeks preparing for player drafts and settling on which of the mini-camp players can help build the foundation for an excellent 2010 roster. The rest of our organization will remain busy with our Independence Day unveiling of the team’s logo, expansion of our youth development programs, release of the ticketing program, and implementation of our club affiliate and membership programs.
