Independence experience flavor of South Philly at International 7

The Independence experienced the flavor of South Philly yesterday at the finals match of the “International 7” Adult League. The corner of 9th and Passyunk is famous for its cheesesteak rivals, Pat’s and Geno’s, but is also home to city fields that host International 7 soccer games on the weekends. Ruth Bull, who was highly involved with the women’s game for many years in Mexico, now organizes the International 7 league in Philly and takes pride in the community gathering the event has turned into. Every Sunday the park turns into a bustling arena where families can enjoy the weather, compete, eat, and socialize. The finals match drew an even bigger crowd yesterday afternoon, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement as the top teams in the league fought for bragging rights. The 6v6 games are played on short fields that are lined by families and fans who cheer for their chosen teams, and the Independence staff was welcomed warmly. “It was such a great atmosphere” says Director of Outreach, Kelly Rowland. “If we get half the passion from fans at Independence matches that we saw today, we’ll be in good shape! This soccer community has a great appreciation for the sport, and we’re so glad we were able to experience the fun.”
