Five Players Invited to Preseason from Independence Tryouts

Final Combine Yields Additional Players for Preseason Roster
The Independence hosted a final open tryout on Monday and Tuesday of this week and saw some of the best action yet from prospective players. Twenty-five players, including ten who had been invited back from previous combines, attended this week’s tryout in a final effort to earn a spot on the preseason roster. Five Independence hopefuls earned that coveted call-back from their performance at the event and have been invited to join the Independence when preseason kicks off in March.
Held at the official training home of the Independence, United Sports in Downingtown, the combine proved to be a test of both skill and character, as players competed in pouring rain on Monday and snow on Tuesday. “Our open tryouts have all been very successful, but I think the competition that we saw at this one was the best yet” said General Manager Terry Foley. “Every player who attended this week’s tryout worked incredibly hard and made our decision difficult. There were five players who really stood out to us though, and we believe they all have the ability to play at the next level. We are looking forward to seeing what they can do in training camp.” The four field players and one goalkeeper will enter preseason with twenty-four other players with the hopes of making the final cut before the season kicks off in April.
In addition to calling several players into preseason, the Independence invited a handful of players back to join the WPSL Independence team this summer. The Independence WPSL team will serve as a stepping stone to the professional team and will be an important component to the success of the franchise. “The WPSL is the best semi-professional league for women in the country, and having our own team involved with the Independence will be very beneficial for us” says Foley. “It’s a great opportunity to keep quality players involved with the professional team and a chance for them to continue working toward the highest level.”
With the season just around the corner, the Independence continues to finalize the preseason roster and search for the top players to strengthen the squad.
