Caroline Seger Officially Signs 3 Year Contract During Visit to Philadelphia

Swedish National Team Captain Gets First Taste of Life with the Independence
Swedish National Team Captain and first International Draft Pick, Caroline Seger, officially signed her 3-year contract with the Independence during her first visit to Philadelphia last month. Caroline is widely considered to be one of the best midfielders in the world and she will be an important member of the Independence roster in 2010.
During her nearly perfect season with top Swedish Club Linkopings this year, Caroline won a national championship, the Cup Gold, and was awarded the Diamond Ball as the top overall player in the Damallsvenskan. She was also recently named #1 on the Top 50 Athletes list in the Region, an honor that is highly regarded and well-deserved. Her success at every level bodes well for the Independence squad and Caroline’s official signing is an exciting event for Philadelphia soccer fans.
Caroline, who was one of the featured Independence players at the NSCAA Convention, got her first taste of life in the States during her week-long visit to her new home. She also got her first taste of Philadelphia sports fanaticism at a pre-draft MLS event with the Sons of Ben, the die-hard Union supporter group. The Daughters of Betsy, a Sons of Ben spinoff, will be the Official Independence supporter group and is comprised of mostly the same soccer enthusiasts. When Caroline was introduced to the crowd by Sons of Ben President, Bryan James, a unanimous chant of “Sweet Caroline” rose from the group, welcoming the Swedish superstar to the Philadelphia soccer community.
“They are very funny, and it’s very exciting” said Caroline of her Sons of Ben welcome and experience in Philly. “I am very much looking forward to coming to Philadelphia to play for the Independence.”
Caroline will return to Philadelphia for the 2010 WPS Season in early March after the 2010 Algarve Cup. She, along with Independence teammates Heather Mitts, Amy Rodriguez, and Lori Lindsey, will arrive for WPS preseason after competing with her country in the International tournament. “We are thrilled that we were able to come to contract terms with Caroline, and we know she will do great things in the WPS next season” said General Manager, Terry Foley. “Things continue to fall into place as we gear up for the WPS kickoff and we are looking forward to the exciting road ahead.”
